Annual Professional Development

Annual professional development is the most popular way for schools and districts to partner with Mossflower for year-long professional development to support literacy instruction. Typically, this option includes:

  • At least seven days of school-specific professional development for each grade band: K-2, 3-5, 6-8.

  • A Staff Developer that specializes in grades K-2, 3-5, or 6-8. Staff Developers work shoulder-to-shoulder with teachers, studying their students’ reading and writing, responding to teachers’ goals and questions, and demonstrating best practices in literacy instruction. Staff Developers not only work with teachers, but they collaborate with school leaders to understand the school’s priorities and goals.

  • Most professional development days include demonstration teaching and coaching in “labsites classrooms,” as well as support for grade-level study groups. Staff developers use a variety of methods, including direct instruction, demonstration, guided practice, coaching, and shared inquiry. Teachers are encouraged to try some of these methods with their own students.

In addition to professional development, schools and districts gain access to:

  • The Mossflower learning community, …

  • Monthly Leadership Conferences which provide opportunities for principals, assistant principals,  and literacy coaches to think and collaborate

  • Opportunities to pilot pre-publication curricula

  • Access to the Mossflower Treasure Chest, an online portal full of teaching resources and instructional materials that are updated regularly.

These resources are available free of charge to all teachers and principals at schools and districts engaged in Annual Professional Development.
